What To Expect From a Microneedling Treatment
During a microneedling procedure, a microneedling pen creates micro-injuries on the skin. These micro-injuries help activate and regrow collagen and elastin in the skin, two proteins that help to keep skin firm. Read on to learn more about what you can expect from a microneedling treatment.
What Is It?
A microneedling treatment is also known as collagen induction therapy. In this treatment, we give your skin micro-injuries with a microneedling pen that leads to the rebuilding of collagen and elastin. These two proteins are critical for maintaining healthy skin. As you age, your body produces fewer of these proteins, which is why you develop fine lines, sagging skin, and larger pores. By stimulating the skin, you encourage protein growth, and your skin can regain its firm and smooth features.
How To Prepare
This treatment can do a lot for your skin, but that doesn’t mean you are automatically able to get it. Various factors can interfere with the treatment you must be aware of, as it is not an ordinary facial. For example, you should restrict skin-related medications or skin care products for a few weeks, depending on your own body chemistry and the products. You should limit Accutane and topical retinoids for at least six months before a microneedling procedure, as they heighten your skin’s sensitivity and leave you more susceptible to bacterial infection.
Post-Treatment
Microneedling stimulates growth-proteins, and does wonders for skin rejuvenation. After a treatment, you will see:
- Reduced wrinkles
- Healed acne scars, sun damage, and stretch marks
- Softer skin
- Reduced signs of aging
This is just the tip of the iceberg. These treatments can bring new life to your skin, but you have to care for your skin appropriately post-treatment. After microneedling, your skin will be incredibly sensitive, so constantly apply moisturizer, sunscreen, and antioxidant-rich products. Also, drink lots of water, refrain from makeup for at least 24 hours, and avoid sweat-inducing exercise and direct sunlight. These practices limit bacteria from entering and potentially causing skin infections.
